So you have accurate information…Flood cars (like those from Katrina) are not sold at auctions to be put back on the road. There is a lot of "homework" to be done before going to an auction. make sure you know the real value of the vehicles you intend to bid on. If you aren't a car savvy person, take along a friend who is. Remember there is a buyers premium added to the bid price. It's a set percentage that helps pay the opetrating expenses of the auction house. Don't get caught in a "bidding war". Set a limit on how much you will bid and don't exceed it. I have picked up some good deals. You just need to be smart about how you bid and what you bid on. Good luck and have fun.

first off, the city does not auction reposessed cars. Reposessed cars belong to the banks. They sell them at dealer auctions, and occasionally at public sale.

The only auctions held by governments are either their own vehciles (ex-cop cars, city water trucks, etc) and cars seized by the police as evidence. Check your main police station's public information officer for that.

Also look into auctions at tow yards. People dont pay the impound fees to get cars out. Those cars are sold to satisfy the bill to the tow yard

you can get a pretty sweet ride at a live auction. Generally, if you win they give you 30 days to pay and a chance to inspect the car before bidding starts. Try out online auctions too – no fuss no muss – and you can actually SEARCH for something you want. Check out this site: governmentauctions.org – they are an excellent resource for live and internet auctions. thanks!

In CA it depends on where you will be selling them. If you want to buy at auction and sell to dealers, or recon adn reauction the cars, you can get a wholesalers license. On that license you are allowed up to 5 cars per year retail. If your intention is to sell them to the general public, then you need a retail dealers license.

You can get all the details, and requiremetns for each license on the CA DMV website here: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vehindustry/ol/forms/vehicledealer.htm

There are all kinds of car auctions — dealer auctions (must have dealer's license), public auctions, police auctions, repo auctions, government auctions, and so on. Here's an article with more details:

      http://www.leaseguide.com/Articles/carauctions.htm

The web sites that offer directories of such auctions are mostly legit but their data may be limited or out of date. So, if you buy, make sure they have a money-back guarantee in case you are not happy with the service.

    16. Some car auction lots don't allow people without a dealers license to actually buy cars from them. You can always find a lot that buys them from auctions and sells them. I've seen 2001 mustangs go for 3k or so.
